My answer is not to print with Painter. It has never worked for me.
I have QuarkXPress and print through that but I'm sure Photoshop would work,
too.

I think it depends on what is for.
If it's for your personal use, I don't think there's any problems printing
from Painter. I have always printed my Painter RIFF files directly from
Painter in normal RGB - also when I had Painter Classic. I have always had
excellent results with my HP Deskjet 930C.
As far as I have understood, the problems start when you try to do CMYK.
For the moment, as I have no need for CMYK, I prefer doing Painter in
Painter and Photoshop in Photoshop, as I find that the screen colors of a
Painter painting change radically in Photoshop in a quite unacceptable way.
When I print a Painter painting from Painter, the print result is so close
to the screen image that I'd have difficulties seeing a difference. I set
both programs to Adobe RGB 1998, but the difference remains.
Peter, have you tried to change anything in the "Preferences" /"Windows"?
Check "free memory for printing" and uncheck "no print banding" - I read in
the Painter 6 manual that checking the latter can cause problems with HP
Deskjet printers.

And I actually made a mistake. I DO print out through Painter Classic, all
the time. It's Painter full version whose images I bring into QuarkXPress.
