Painter IX grayed-out menus

I installed Painter IX (Education version) but I cannot create a new
canvas/file, and all menus are grayed-out (can be pulled down but all
choices grayed out) EXCEPT the Help Menu and choices work fine. I
cannot close the program, have to use Task Manager to kill it.

The same CD has successfully installed on two other PCs (then erased).
I have no problems running many other commercial programs on my PC (XP
SP1, 2 GHz 512 MB Sony with ATI 7500 All-in-Wonder 64MB).

My system and the other two all have 32 bit color; other two have ATI
AiW 8500 and a newer ATI PCI Express video card.

Uninstalling and reinstalling (after shutdown) yields same results.
I've never seen anything like it.
