I have Painter Classic l.0.2 . When I try to apply Auto Van Gogh, my
monitor just shows solid dark color.

My goal in buying this software was to render photographs into either
watercolor or oil paintings. I really need some direction about how to
uses this software. I have the user's guide in Acrobat Reader, but it's
not helping me much.

Would anyone care to help a floundering newbie?

thanks in advance

Hi,

You're going to be extremely limited using Painter Classic as it's an
"appetizer" based on Painter 5. It doesn't begin to included the
capabilities found in full Painter versions.

I'd suggest that you buy a full version and if you don't want to spend
that much, try finding Painter 6, the last version since we're now at
Painter 7. If you're careful to make sure you're getting the full, legit
software, you may find a good price at E-Bay. Be sure you'll be able to
register it so you'll be eligible for upgrade pricing in the future.

I realized that I wasn't buying the "full blown" software, but still I should think
it'd be behaving better than it is. Please tell me how to get the auto Van Gogh
selection to work.

thanks

What you think it should be doing is not very relevant.

You got crippled software. Next time buy the real thing.

Make sure you first clone the image. Then apply Auto Van Goh to the
clone. If you don't clone first, Painter applies the last selection to
the Fill menu item to the image--in your case it was probably Fill using
foreground coolor, which was most likely black. If you had used a
Pattern or Gradient Fill, then painter would apply it. You will find
Clone under the File menu. You will discover that you get more control,
however, if you use the Cloner brushes.

William,

Painter Classic defaults to the currently active Pattern if an image
file name is not checked under File > Clone Source. It's the same in
full versions of Painter as well.

I think what happened to georgia is that the active Pattern was
"granite" which is black, grey, tan, and white and when she use Auto Van
Gogh, it took the dark color information from the Pattern and painted it
into the currently active image, which obviously was not a Clone of
georgia's original image since Painter automatically checks the original
image file name as the Clone Source when the Clone is made. (That is,
unless her orginal image was dark in some area and that happened to be
the area she was Cloning from at the moment.)

Painter only applies the last used Fill choice when Fill is used the
next time in the same Painter session. That has nothing to do with Clone
painting.
