What is better in Painter 7?

Hello, I have heard many people say painter 7 is very slow and bad, yet it
seems most here are choosing to keep working with painter 7 vrs 6.1.

I am wondering what things specifically are really that much better in terms
of speed or options or effects in Painter 7 compared to Painter 6.1?

I have never used Painter 7 so I am really wondering what if anything
special I will gain by upgrading.

Thanks.

Hi MD

Works better with win xp, that's why I'm using it. One other thing the image
will fit the screen space available. Forget the water colour brushes and
keep ver 6 for that.

Not impressed, a lot of money just for xp support!

The liquid ink media is a great new feature. It's also very useful to be
able to convert a layer to a watercolor layer. More variable zoom is an
improvement.

Hi Rob,

The Variable zoom doesn't work for me at all in version 7, the image
noticeably distorts when scaling out at any percentage. If it's not
distorting for you, can you tell me what OS your using? I thought that
maybe OSX would'nt distort since zooming is built into the Quartz engine.

I'm sticking with 6 until I get a new Mac with OSX. So I won't be using 7
for at least another 5 months.

Thanks,
Chris, Barbarian Artist.

Chris,

I'm using Windows 2000. I get no distortion, but I have noticed that Painter
image zoomed out will not render on the screen quite as clearly as the same
image zoomed out in Photoshop 6. At 100% they will be the same.

Well, I personally can not recommend an upgrade from 6.1 at all.
I prefer to work with 6.1 because 7 is just way too slow with most tools.
On top, I got a German version and the 7.1 update will only work with the
Englsih version.
That is almost an invitation to use an unlicensed copy of Painter.

Oh, the way a mind of slime thinks. There is no "invitation" to use
unlicensed software. Any software worth using is worth paying for. Or don't
use it.

I have several complaints with and wishes for Painter 7, but I still prefer
it over 6. The ability to lift the canvas to a watercolor layer, the ability
to wet the entire layer and control how that wetness occurs, the liquid ink
media, and the degree of control we have over watercolor brushes are all
reasons I prefer version 7. John Derry, in his guides to the water color
media and the liquid ink media, offers methods to deal with the slowness of
those media. It's inexcusably shameful that the important information in
John's guides is not included in the manual. Were it not for what I learned
from John's guides, I would have a lot less to like about Painter 7. It
makes one wonder what other treasures were built into Painter 7 that the
manual fails to describe.

phew...thats not a nice thing to say.
Perhaps you read my posting: I have paid for both updates. Now I cant even
get proper patches, so what do you expect? That I run around wearing a huge
happy hat praising Corel`s support? (thats only the support issue...)

So where are these tutorials to be found?
This might all be true, however the general "feel" of 6 is just better, but
thats a personal thing. 7 is just very strange and tricky to use on my
computers and I guess theyre not exactly slow machines either.
But I appreciate any help to make it run faster, perhaps 7 is worth its
money after all.
I doubt it though.

Bernd,

I could have made my point without a direct attack on you, so I appologize
for that. Although I did not miss the fact that you said you had paid for
the software, you also seemed to be one very small step away from justifying
software piracy.

Okay, the tutorials I mentioned used to be available at Jinny Brown's
www.pizelalley.com, but I don't see them there now. They are probably
available from the Procreate/Corel somewhere, but a quick look didn't find
them. I hope someone else can provide a link to them.

As for program slowness, you have to acknowledge that the program has an
awlful lot of work to do, especially at high resolutions. I find that with
an Athlon XP 1800 and under Win 2K it delivers well enough.

okay, but you get my point, Im just pissed off with Corel.
I have bought every programme I use, just to make that clear.
but this time it seems I did not get what I wanted.

okay. thanks.

Well, sure, but then, I wonder, what is the point of those fancy new
watercolours when you can not really work with them. I downloaded a water
colour brush from the website you mentioned: well...it still did not perform
as I wished:
I sometimes need brushes perhaps 150 - 200 pixels wide to paint backgrounds
in a few strokes. That simply is not possible. WIth some tools I get an out
of memory error: the comp I work on is a Pentium 4 2 GHz with 2 GB RAM.
If that setup is not fast and big enough I dont know what is. Painter 7 was
part of the reason to get that new computer and now the performance is still
so slack that I gladly went back to Painter 6.1 (which I could only update
with a lot of luck as versions other than the English one were not meant to
be used with the 6.1 patch, but thats another story...)..
phew...so...I am just pissed off.
Everyone uses Painter in a different way, for me 7 is just not an option so
far.
I tried to download those tools from that in-depth-discussions site but
couldnt find them anywhere.
Any idea where they could be?
best,
B.

Rob,

I hate to sound like an echo, but had I read Herr Bernd's last post
before my previous reply, I'd have said something similar.

Thank you for your well expressed thoughts with which I completely
agree:

Bernd,

The Visual Guides were part of the Painter 7 Update package and some of
them are available to you by clicking Help > Tutorials, then following
the links.

Below this message is a complete list of direct URLs to the Painter 7
Update files in a message I sent around shortly after the Painter 7
Update was released. So many people were unable to use the Procreate
site for these files that it seemed best to simply make it possible for
them. Procreate certainly isn't much help when it comes to their site
and anything related to it.

Also, go to the PixelAlley Section Links Page at ...

http://www.pixelalley.com/pixelalley-sections-pages.html

..... then follow the links on the right side of the page to find a lot of
helpful information for Painter 7. Read everything on each page and
download any PDF files that you don't already have. Especially be sure
to read the tutorial by Jeremy Sutton that explains how to make brushes
and Paper texture work together properly, since in Painter 7 they work
differently from earlier versions.

Bernd,

With the Painter 7 Update came a new kind of brushes, the Tinting
brushes and a new John Derry Visual Guide to explain them. Make sure you
download all of the files from the URLs I sent you, read through the
Tinting brushes Visual Guide, and try those brushes for painting those
backgrounds. John Derry created the Tinting brushes to satisfy earlier
version users who were unhappy to have lost their simpler Water Color
brushes. I tested them out painting a sky with a large brush and got
nice even color very quickly. Then I set up a particular Water Color
Brush Variant and a particular Paper, and lifted the painted Canvas to a
Water Color Layer, then used Wet Entire Water Color Layer. Suddenly I
had a Water Color sky! It was easy and fast. And my system is a real
wimp compared to yours:

Pentium III
500 mHz
128 MB RAM
20 GB hard drive with about 10 GB free
8 MB video RAM

It takes a lot of housecleaning to keep the old girl going.

In other words, don't despair.

Re: In Depth Discussions.. a rather sad story that's having a happy
ending after all:

Large site crash and we're starting all over from scratch. We'll have to
gather up as much of the resources as we can, though it will be a while
if ever, before everythings back together again.

The site is open now and Eric Rainey is busting his tailfeathers setting
everything up. The rest of us are doing what we can and giving him as
much moral support as possible. Thank heaven it's a wonderful community
of artists who will most likely pitch in and do their part.

If you joined before, you'll have to re-register since all of that was
lost in the crash.

Please come visit us there. I think you'll find there's a lot of support
and encouragement.. tips.. workarounds.. ways to handle brushes... etc.
