There's a brush category called Artists and there are variants called Van
Gogh and Impressionist. But they're different from the version 5 variants.
The Impressionist brush has a captured tip, you can see an example of its
use on this page at my web site--I used it to create the tall, thin tree on
the left-hand side of the pink and green restaurant painting.

The Van Gogh brush in Painter 8 is a little more like the version 5 brush
than the Impressionist brush is like its Painter 5 counterpart, but it
behaves differently. You don't have that dotted line before the stroke
decides how to paint itself. And it's somewhat smoother in Painter 8.
I think these 2 variants are just as good in Painter 8, but they are
different from the ones in Painter 5 and if you want the precise duplicates,
then you won't find them.
Now I just got an idea. The Seurat brush IS identical in Painter 8 to
version 5, so you can make that into the Impressionist Brush. In the Brush
Creator you turn down the Angle: Squeeze slider and the Random: Jitter
slider and voila, old-style Impressionist brush from Painter 5. Veddy
interesting.
There's no switch for the Van Gogh brush. My opinion--would you really miss
that dotted line delay if you could paint continuous multicolored brush
strokes? I think the strokes look reasonably similar.
That's the long answer to the short question ;-)

And since Pete has Painter 5 brushes in the Painter.BRS format, he can
"Import" the brush library to have Painter 8 convert it into the new
format if he wants to make sure.

The names are there in the Artists categories' variant list. Haven't
used them and compared how they work with the same variants in other
versions, though. I haven't heard about any changes in the Artists
variants and their names look pretty much as I remember.
Maybe someone else has actually used them and done the comparison.
We can also import earlier version brushes into Painter 8 as we did with
Painter 6, and Painter 7. That's no guarantee they'll work exactly the
same though.
Good luck,
