I have been running Painter 8 just fine for several months and I just
used it yesterday. Upon trying to reopen the program last night, I kept
getting the message "Can't open painter.set" and it won't open up the
program. I tried rebooting and then shutting down and restarting my
computer but I still get the message. Like I said, I have been using
the program fine for months without a problem. Do I need to reinstall
or has something else gone wrong? As far as I know, there have been no
changes to my system which runs Windows XP and has 512 MB RAM.

Hi Charles,

It is a good idea to keep a copy of the '.set' file (not corrupted) outside
the Painter application folder. I believe that there is a 'repair' option on
the Painter 8 install CD (Windows version only). If you first delete the
current .set file, then run the 'repair' install, you may be in luck. Sorry
I can't give you more specific details as I'm on a Mac.

Dear Dave,

Thanks. You were right, Painter automatically detected that I had an
installed version of the program and offered me the repair option. I
tried it the first time without erasing the painter.set file and it
didn't repair it, so I tried it again after erasing the file just like
you said and it now seems to work fine. I'm going to make a backup copy
of the painter.set file too.

Hi,

The Painter.set file becomes corrupted now and then and it needs to be
replaced with a fresh file.

We can't directly access the Painter 8 default files on the CD as we
could with Painter 7, or install them separately from the main Painter
installation as we could with Painter 6.

Instead, try the following:

1. Close Painter 8 and other programs.

2. Move any files you created into a new backup folder outside of the
Painter 8 folders.

3. Insert Painter 8 CD 1.

4. When AutoRun window appears, click Install Corel(R) Painter(TM) 8.

5. After the installation preparation is completed, you'll see a new
window that says:

quote:
Program Maintenance
Repair or remove the program.

[•] Repair
Repair installation errors in the program. This option fixes
missing or corrupt files, shortcuts, and registry entries.

[ ] Remove
Remove Corel Painter 8 from your computer.

With the Repair radio button checked, click the Next button and follow
the prompts.

6. Reboot and see if Painter will launch this time.

7. If it does launch and seems to be running properly, close the
program, make a backup copy of the Painter.set file, and place it in a
folder somewhere outside of the Painter 8 folders. Now you can paste a
copy of the backup Painter.set file into the Corel > Corel Painter 8
folder if the Painter.set file becomes corrupted again.

If Painter 8 doesn't launch and run properly, you can try Uninstalling
and reinstalling (and installing the Painter 8.1 patch if you want):

1. Close Painter 8 and other programs.

2. Move any files you created into a new backup folder outside of the
Painter 8 folders.

3. Uninstall Painter 8.

4. Manually delete any remaining Painter 8 folders and files.

5. Reboot.

6. Install Painter 8 and if you're going to install the Painter 8.1
patch, don't open Painter 8 even one time.

7. Install the Painter 8.1 patch.

8. Reboot.

9. Launch Painter 8 (or Painter 8.1 if you installed the patch).
