HI everybody, I'm new to this group so forgive me if I repeat an
earlier point, but I think there are 2 issues here.
1 is the systems and processes that allow information to flow across
and around organisations. A great deal can be accomplished just by
having an organisation that is keen to see data, information (and
ultimately, knowledge) shared and utilised. But a single data solution,
or data solutions that talk to each other automatically; robust
archiving and identifiable content processes are a critical
facilitators.
2 but underpinning it all is an organisation that is
mature
enough to allow information (content, data, information, insight...) to
flow. Such organisations tend to have less gateways and silos that
'contain' information. Their data solutions, archiving, content
processes etc are geared towards access and flow not containment.
And this maturity has nothing to do with size. Some organisations can
be wonderfully information pliant ( I mean pliant and not compliant).
Others have rigid structures, often masquerading as governance or 'the
way we do things round here' that make it very hard to share, change or
create information. It's all there but effectively unuseable - like a
library full of books with the pages superglued together.
Anne
I joined the string at this point...
Elena: "I think that's a really good point, Seamus. I wish more
companies would
see it more clearly. And I agree that I was generalizing. I only have
direct knowledge of research on the business needs of mid-market CIOs.
I couldn't make the same claim for large enterprise."
Seamus: "
My
point being
that when information flows freely across business processes (HR, IT,
Procurement, Finance and the supply chain) companies become more
effective and more efficient."
