Happy new year and all that jazz!!
It was mentioned in Andy's message about one of the possibilities for
this year being a CCHS web site for a better web presence.
I'd be more than happy to set something up, I have plenty of hosting
slots available with my hosting company, and would be more than
willing to donate the hosting for a CCHS web site.
Just wondering, if it isn't too premature a conversation, if anyone
has suggestions for a suitable domain name.
I have done a quick check and "cchs.anything" is already taken, but
"cchs-melbourne.com" is available.
any other more suitable suggestions?
Cheers
Justin

Yes, quite true. This was further discussed at the meeting on Tuesday
night.
Especially, given that we wish to project a good representation of the
group (when seeking a residence or funding or new members) and just
keeping existing members better informed ... and providing a means by
which all members can provide content / updates.
PeteY offered to lead the initial charge to get things underway
(perhaps I've overstated his comments :)

That's an excellent offer ... thanks !
Scott Penrose (on behalf of the OSDC) had previously made an offer,
which has been put in play.
So, we do now have a virtual host for the web-site.
We just need to ensure that appropriate attribution to OSDC is
visible.
PeteY has access to that virtual host ... and perhaps is willing to be
the point-man for a while ?
However, I don't think that we need to have a rule that there is only
one virtual host and only one way of doing things. Of course,
unnecessary fragmentation doesn't make sense either. So, what I'd
suggest is let's see how we go ... and if there are any limitations or
need for additional resources, your kind offer would not be
forgotten. Different types of experimentation to solve problems is
something to be encouraged (within reason).
At this point, I think time spent improving the existing content ...
and adding content for the missing parts ... is a good thing to do.
And, I recall that you've been doing that as well ... for the Aiko
project ... thanks !

A while ago, Scott Penrose set-up http://hackmelbourne.org ... and
more recently re-directed it to the existing Google Group (go on, try
it).
Thanks again Scott and OSDC !
As the new CCHS web-site becomes developed (initially may be just some
static pages, with some nice graphics and text, then linking to the
existing Google Group and various projects pages, discussion, a wiki,
etc) ... then, the http://hackmelbourne.org redirect will be altered
to the web-site.

"hackmelbourne.org" whilst not "cchs" ... didn't seem like a bad place
to start, especially since the price was right !
So, we do have something in place.
However, if the group feels that a better domain name would suit ...
and the budget (which doesn't exist yet) would be okay ... then, there
is no reason not to consider other suggestions.
Many decisions were made last year, just so we could get on with
hacking (rather than going around in circles about the meta-issues
involved with creating a hacking group). This year will be very much
about the decisions being made by and for the group, which will alter
the ratio of hacking versus talking ! It's really a priority
thing ... what's the best use of our limited resources, time, money to
solve the most pressing problems.

Ah, that's the other discussion (re CCHS Location :)
cheers andyg (@geekscape)
I like hackmelbourne, but then again, I would, as I'm a hacker :-)
We may want to have a more media-friendly name we can give out to
those who don't yet understand what hacking's about, and
cchs-melbourne.com may fit the bill. And at US$9pa for a .com, it
won't break the bank.
Mitch.
Better if you don't use .com - org is much more appropriate.
What about grabbing hacker-space.org, and using a Melbourne subdomain?
That way if another Hackerspace wants to make another subdomain, you
just have to add a DNS record for them.
Or cchs.asn.au, since it's an association.
Yes, they're both available.
Clifford Heath.
You probably wouldn't use hacker-space.org, because it's too similar
to the already existing hackerspaces.org, creating confusion.
hackerspaces.org is kind of a portal/blog that aggregates information
about the concept of hackerspaces in general, and about specific
implementations of hackerspaces all around the world.
Well then, can you get a subdomain from them, and create
melbourne.hackerspaces.org?
Clifford Heath.
Also strikes me that we should worry about having great content before
we spend too much time debating domain name options. :)
I'll be playing with some stuff this weekend which should help us get
started. Stay tuned.
