Hi all,

To introduce myself, I'm a reclusive member who's only managed one
Hackerspace session... and that was even only for half a session.

Just had a inquiry that I was hoping someone might be able to help me
out with. I'm trying to track down a developer who's worked with both
Kinect and particle systems for a project with a very short time frame
on it. There's a small budget attached to it...

Here are the basic details:

- A product launch in a Melbourne bar for Cloudy Bay.

- We're looking at a lcd screen table top (two 46" screens seamless
end to end) with a kinect installed above the table. Essentially the
idea is to replicate a mulit-touch table but you don't need to touch
the table.

- The content falls into two main elements:
1. A particle system that emulates water. When anything detected by
the kinect, this disturbs the water.
2. When items are placed on the table, this triggers animation.
Animation is specific to object size.

- Delivery date: Wednesday 15th Feb (very soon)

- The art and animation is taken care of, we're just looking at the
interaction...

- Ideally in Flash or Processing

- Budget allocation is $2,000 (negotiable)

Any advice or leads would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Lachlan

Could use a wii controller

wiimotewhiteboard

http://www.wiimoteproject.com/index.php?action=downloads;cat=5

and

darwiinremote

http://hackaday.com/2007/12/09/wiimote-projector-whiteboard/

there was a really interesting mac software app that I had for a while that was used to make/do performance art/dance interactively using the wii IR camera positioned stationarily and the performer would have an IR source (a candle, even) that would trigger displays like 'flames' or 'snow' on the dataprojector display in position with the performance in realtime. That was at least one HDD crash ago, so have lost it. Soz, lame-out. Can't even remember its name. Some French guy.

but if you have to use a kinect

Thanks,

Wii's are definitely fun. Although this one requires mass user
interaction and there for the Kinect is what I'm looking at...

And thanks for the link - look's like a good one.

Cheers

Hi

If you get really stuck, there's a few companies that do this sort of
thing...
For starters....

www.eness.com

www.lightwell.com.au/

If the turnaround wasn't so fast, there would be lots of interactive
design students willing to give it a go...

Sounds cool tho!

I've worked on computer vision of sorts, but I haven't worked with the
Kinect.
You could perhaps try the OpenCV (Open Computer Vision) list on Yahoo.
I seem to recall some people there working on it.

John.

The Creature Technology Company in West Melbourne were working with
animation Dinosaurs.
I'm not sure if they are working with the Kinect, but it would make a
good match for some of the projects they are working on.

http://www.creaturetechnology.com/

They were featured on ABC RN Artworks program a few years ago.
I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go visit their factory
a few years ago.
They are doing some interesting robotics work.

Hey John,

Thanks for the references. Open CV is definitely a go. The
animatronics guys look great too. Will look into them.

Thanks!

Hi Lachlan,

Basics is its displaying the kinect depth view on a webpage. (kinect -> python -> node.js -> web (chrome only) ).
The code is up on GitHub.

I'm curious, what format is the art work in?

Best Regards,
Andrew Phillips.
