Hi all, just a quick announcement:

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday 9th) we have introduced new casual visit rates for facility fees.

This is a flat $10 fee per session, payable to a committee member or duty officer present.

Hopefully this means that those who can't commit to a monthly or annual payment can still come in and have a hack with us!

Cheers,
Chris Pendlebury,
CCHS treasurer.

If one was to rock along just to say hi and check out the facilities, is the casual fee still applicable?

In fact, is that just to use the facilities, or is it more like a door charge?

Also, does that Apply to the Raspberry Jam, or is that being organized differently? (I personally don't mind either way, just getting clarification)

Good question.

We always want new visitors to be able to drop in and not be discouraged
by any fee structure. There is no charge for people checking out the
space and getting to know the group.

In general, the facility fees (casual or regular) will be for those who
are regularly turning up, making use of the facilities (3D printers,
etc) and getting good value from the space and interaction with other
members.

The casual fee would apply for people who don't turn up often enough to
justify a regular payment of $20 or $40 per month, but who genuinely
wish to make a financial contribution in line with their visiting needs.

To a very large extent, the HackerSpace has attracted honest people with
good community spirit and a willingness to contribute in a number of
ways, including financially.

We don't want to have a complicated fee structure, e.g we aren't a penny
pinching telecommunications company.

Over time, there have been sufficient people asking for some other
option, in-between a regular monthly (or annual) facility fee and paying
nothing (and feeling a little guilty).

The monthly Raspberry Jam is considered an "out-reach" activity. The
Jam was initiated externally by Alec and Oliver, who then run the
sessions (including the middle of the month at RMIT).

The idea being that people using Raspberry Pi for more hardware oriented
activities will get first hand experience with the CCHS ... and if
valuable, consider becoming a HackerSpace member.

There is no charge for Raspberry Jam.

If attendees feel that they have received significant assistance and
wish to help out financially, then the new casual rate is a guideline
for an appropriate contribution.

This is a great idea! That is the one thing that has been stopping me is not being able to justify the fees when I can only attend once a month or less.
