Hey All

Had a thought that it might be a good idea to organise some show & tell evenings. Maybe 1st Tuesday of every month, someone could nominate themselves to do a bit of a preso or lead a workshop in a particular skill they have. This could either be in the workshop area itself or utilise the lil back room, as I hear there's a projector on site.

Not sure if there is a skills matrix available, but I could help build one; if need be.

Also, I heard a rumour that there is a Hackerspace Melbourne repo on GitHub. Can't seem to find it so if anyone knows where it lives that would be great.

I have a workshop on learning Git. It went down well at the local Drupal
group. NB It's for version control novices and assumes no prior knowledge.

Happy to present that if it's of interest.

Well, I for one think its a good idea.   There's a huge variety of experience across the space, it would help share it around.   It might be a decent use for the little room too.

If there are some minor works required (eg to mount a shelf for the projector), or a whiteboard/screen to project onto, let us know and we can probably do at same time as the NFC door access stuff.

I think it's a great idea! I could do an 'introduction to programming'
workshop if that were wanted.

There are probably tons of potential introductory topics in
electronics - basic concepts, soldering techniques, how to drive
servos/actuators... lots of things.

We are already doing 3D printing nights but to have some actual
workshops on the software tools for making 3D models could be good?

Also, I don't know if this really falls into the CCHS's scope, because
we don't seem to have much equipment for it, but I would really like
to learn something of the basics of making "big stuff" - such as the
basics of woodworking. What tools to use to solve particular problems,
where to find them (do I need a bandsaw!?), where to get materials,
etc.

I suppose one logistical limit will be that for any hands-on workshop
(like soldering) we'll need enough equipment for the participants.
Anything computer-based is fine thanks to the donated laptops. And,
someone just giving a presentation is pretty good too - something like
that can really help when you are just getting started and you don't
even know what you don't know!

Hi all,

One good way to share skills matrix is to create shared google doc table with following fields:
 - name
 - have skills to share (+ number of votes from others interested in each skill)
 - skills interested in

I'm new to the group, I hope I'll be able to attend one of nearest general meetings, so I think it's a good time for introduction and my skills summary

Im from software engineering world, have very little electronic engineering background ( I did some simple RC models and homebuilt Z80 based computer ~20 years ago with my brother, but since then my knowledge is mainly theoretical). I have ~7 years experience programming numerical kernel of EdgeCAM CAD/CAM system in 2001-2008 ( mostly 3 axis nc mill machines, but also 5 axis and turn+mill). I do a lot of Node.JS programming in my spare time implementing some low level network protocols (X11, dbus, mysql etc) and can share my knowledge of those protocols and node.js/javascript programming.

I have some hardware ideas requiring usage of capacitive proximity sensors, I bought STM32 development board for prototyping but didn't have enough time yet to go beyond 'blinking led'.

I might meet some of you in this year BarcampMelbourne

Cheers,
Andrey

I was wondering if its worth setting up an Aussie “big box of stuff” to be sent from person to person.

If you don’t know what im talking about. Over on dangerous prototypes they have 2 boxes of electronic “stuff” that are getting transported from person to person on a list. Each person takes some stuff that they will use then adds some different stuff from there surplus box. The idea being you will probably get some electronic “stuff” that you havnt seen before etc.

Being that we are on the other side of the world to most others im wondering if its worth setting up an Aussie “box of stuff”

What do people think?

Im guessing we would first need to get a box of stuff and then work out costs to mail it around AUS. Then some place to store a list of people to send it to.

Anyway, none of it sounds hard and i thought it might be a bit of fun.

Wow all great ideas so far! Keep them coming. I am familiar with Google Docs,( maybe too familiar :) I'll get about something up ASAP...

Typically the skill matrices I have seen or worked on include (skill level), but perhaps that's not required? I'll put something together and then perhaps ask for feedback; or if peeps want to make modifications then they are welcome to do that too!

I'll be at CCHS next Tuesday night, so if anyone also wants to discuss f-2-f or put themselves down for a workshop -- awesome

In addition to more 'formal' workshoppy type things, maybe it is worth making a regular date/time for people just to quickly talk about what they are working on/recent progress/current problems etc. Maybe 1st tues of the month, 8pm or something for <15 mins - a monthly show and tell, just in the main space. I'm sure people have other stuff they work on at home, or have finished projects etc. plus we could advertise this to visitors/potential members as a good time to turn up and it might give them more of an idea about all the stuff people are doing, and it might even help us get to know each other more.

Anyway, just a thought.

Great thanks Lach. Thinking out loud: shall I make a public GoogleDoc or extend this? I think I'll go for the GD option, just not sure if there is any "privacy" issues about using existing information:  http://www.hackmelbourne.org/wiki/index.php/Info/Members_Links

Yesh the 1st Tuesday of the month was your idea Zac to begin with :) I think it;'s neat idea for a 15mins of f(l)ame session.

I'd also like to get a fairly large whiteboard. Without buying one does anyone have any ideas how to make one or just a big pinboard?  Prolly just need cork yeah?

Personally I think you want the easiest / "lowest barrier to contribute" system available, so google doc (or spreadsheet) is the way to go imho.   If it is possible to have a google doc accessible to just the 537 CCHS group members that would be ideal.  I don't know whether that option exists.

We could still link to it from the members_links page on the wiki.

Privacy - for those not on the wiki list - it's going to be up them what they write into the document.   They can use as much or little detail as they are prepared to share.

For those 16 already on the wiki list - if you're worried about cutting and pasting from that document (which is accessible to the whole internet already) - I think just signal your intention to the CCHS group, give it a few days for any objections, and then go for it.

Hey
I can definitely make the google doc accessible to selected people, such as CCHS members: but I need their contact details (i.e emails). Did you say 537:? Ok might take me a lil while but I can do!

The cheap but nice way to make a big whiteboard is to just buy the whiteboard liner for about $35 from Robot Trading.   This is quality laminate about 1mm thick (like kitchen bench laminate), and you can use "red spray" or other contact adhesive to adhere it to something like mdf or chipboard.   The sheet is 2400x1200mm (heaps).  Its just nasty to cut - you need a router (after mounting on mdf) or laminate cutter ideally.  Even 3 or 6mm mdf is thick enough - you just need to make it flat enough to clean easily

I also have some caanite (spelling) pin board if that's useful, but no whiteboard laminate left over unfortunately

Thought on show and tell could be better on 2nd Tuesday. As many
printer folk only come to the space once a week, and we have printers
on 1 + 3rd Mondays.

Great idea, Rosie!

I'd love to do more toyhacking. But this requires a few other HackerSpacers to do the show&tell with me.
What I can contribute: a big grin. In exchange of: my own learning.

What we need:
- At least 5 people who are willing to have express fun with me - we can form 3 pairs.
- Some money (generally under $10 each pair) to buy toys.
- Batteries and regular HackerSpace tools.
- HackerSpacexperts to hassle for technical questions.
- Optional: hot tamarind balls.

What to do:
7pm - Hunt innocent toys in a local Savers or Vinnies or the like.
(Rules: catch at least 2 toys that run with batteries and have different electronic functions with potentially lethal combination.)
7.30pm - Bring innocent toys back to HackerSpace. Devise a transmogrification plan on the way.
7.45pm - Start operation. Be brave, take risks. Ask questions. Take things apart; put them back together ... the 'wrong' way.
9.45pm - Complete transmogrification. Start show&tell: (1) what were the original toys? (2) what did you do to them? (3) what is their acquired superpower? (4) show mutant toys in action.
10pm - Use newborn mutant toys to terrorise other HackerSpacers. Let them have nightmares. Eat hot tamarind balls (optional).
10.08pm - Stack toys for future actions.

Tips:
- If there is to be a next toyhacking session, these stacked toys can be transmogrified even further.
- No, they won't come alive at night.

Trivia: the word "toy" comes from an Old English word that means "tools".

Hope this pleases. Looking forward to it.

hi All,

Thanks Rosie, Zac, Lachlan et al ... for running with this ... a great
idea !

Grass roots self-organization is crucial ... rather than (only) top-down
from the committee, etc.

Also, thanks everyone who have been recently taking the initiative to
get stuff done, e.g. door access group, laser cutter, those running
sessions (3D printing, Raspberry Pi, young hackers on school holidays),
quietly cleaning up after others, donating time / equipment,
contributing to group projects, organizing / attending / promoting CCHS
at external events, keeping those 3D printers running, emptying the bins :)

Very true. How does having the first one on Tuesday, October 8th (2nd
Tuesday of the month) sound ?

One of the best things about the HackerSpace is the people you meet ...
and then get to collaborate with on projects.

As we grow, keeping up with "who's who" and "who does what" will get
increasingly difficult (especially for newcomers).

Also, it is important to maintain (and adapt) the culture of our group,
especially around sharing and learning.

As someone who has just joined the mailing list and not yet attended (and having little experience), I would be really interested in these sessions. The only problem for me is that the first Tuesday of the month coincides with the local LUG's monthly meeting, so I would have to choose between.

hi Edward,
We meet every Tuesday evening ... therefore, no conflict for all those
other Tuesdays.

Or ...

You could turn up on a Saturday morning.
If you are specifically interesting 3D printing, there is the first and
third Monday of the month.
If you are interested in the Raspberry Pi, there is the first Saturday
afternoon of the month.

The hardest (but awesome) option would be to convince enough CCHS
members to start another hacking session (perhaps robots and quadcopters
next ?) at another time of the week. I'd suggest alternate Mondays,
in-between 3D printing ... or Saturday afternoons ... to build up
consistency around days of the week when meetings occur often, but not
every week.

Hey Clare
I was hoping you might kick-off one of the nights with your suggested 'introduction to programming'. Haven't got a date in mind yet but would be good as to your thoughts of when we could do this and what resources you may need. We're almost done with the CCHS survey in terms of the framework, well almost completed enough to ask for feedback. So, I'll let you know when this is sorted.
Perhaps after we generate the data that specifies skills and workshop ideas etc, you and I (and others) could work out a possible program of events for 2012-2013. Would that be something you would interested in also?
Cheers! rosiex

Hello world,

We have a google docs form organised which will collect our data, but we do need to decide which areas people think are relevant.
They need to be fairly general so we don't get stuck in minutiae.

I proposed to Rosie a few things off the top of my head:

Arduino
Electronics
Programming
Robotics
3D printing
Some word encompassing using the lathes and mill???
Raspberry Pi

Obviously there is overlap between these. This seems to cover a lot of what people do, but I think some more options would be good to give us all a better idea of what people would like to get involved in.

So, If you have an idea of what other things people at the space might be interested in, or think a category should be split or merged, or your particular baby isnt included, please reply to this. There is room for 'Other' in the survey, but it is probably worth covering most things with specific questions.

Just as an addendum to my last email, If people are interested in possibilities for what can be achieved you might want to look at  https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Noisebridge, a san francisco hackerspace. In addition to tech stuff, they have regular craft, food, lockpicking, languages, all sorts of stuff.
