Dell digital 20" monitor

[Alec Clews]

The office has scrapped a nice Dell 20" monitor, probably due to circuit
board or power supply issues. If I bring it to Hackerspace is anyone
interested in trying to repair it so it can be donated to CCHS? I
suspect the Raspberry Pi owners would be pleased to have access to
another digital monitor :-)

I too have a Dell 2407 (24" 7th gen) that popped its power board on new year's eve.

 

Seems to be a common problem - board's capacitors are lowgrade and dried out,

but the fireworks has probably taken out other downstream components as well.

but they're extremely rare to find lately.

 

If it were a $200-300 unit then i'd have called it an uneconomic fix & tossed it

but the 2407 is $800 with myriad useful inputs... new equivalent is still $700+.

Plus we've added soundbar & stand that the new Dells have changed since.

 

Would be good to hear what you guys suggest.

Hi Guys

I think the general idea is that you should absolutely bring these kinds of things to the space to repair them, however we have very limited storage space and no real need for extra monitors so once they've been repaired they should head home with you (or anyone you wish to donate too).

There may be some merit in the idea of "upgrading" some of the older LCD's at the space, but we shouldn't end up with more than we now so it's up to the "upgradee" to arrange disposal of any extras.

Ahh, you could be right there actually. I admit I haven't actually looked at the ones we have.

Perfect candidates for upgrading then.

Somewhat related, maybe we should look at doing a regular "e-waste" recycling day where members can chip in to get a disposal company to visit and deal with it.  Sort of "recycle and a BBQ".

I've got a company coming in this week to remove some servers and computer equipment from my work so I'll ask them for  some prices.

There are already two or three at the space as far as I'm aware. How many do we need? How many people actually have a need/demand to use an LCD monitor at the space, provided by the space, at the same time?

Given the very limited amount of space at the space and the infrequent need for many LCD monitors to be used at the same time, I'm not sure that it's justified to keep more than that at the space.

In any case, please do *not* leave any monitors at the space unless they're either already working or you've repaired them and tested them successfully.  (And even if they're working we probably do not want many, if any, more.) If you can't repair it or won't repair it then you can take it away with you, do not leave it at the space.

Just of note here:

Luke is absolutely right about taking stuff away. We've collected a lot of stuff that is cluttering the space up and that needs to be removed.

That said, most of the LCD screens are VGA only (analog), and do not do HDMI or DVI (digital). At a minimum we really want screens that do both VGA & DVI. You can convert HDMI to DVI with a suitable cheap converter, but you can't convert HDMI to VGA cheaply, or with any quality.

This is specifically a problem for things like the Raspberry Pi's, for HDMI is the primary display. Having only one LCD screen at the space that does DVI, and the projector, limits people's ability to sit down in front of a Pi, by itself, and hack away, which affects the Raspberry Pi group.

As Alec said, we've only got 1 monitor that does both VGA (analog) & DVI (digital), so if we can get replacements that do DVI as well, that'd be great! If they can't be repaired though, we'd ask that people dispose of them thoughtfully, rather than leaving them at the space for someone else to do.

Note: I'm as guilty of this as anyone else. I've got a dead LCD VGA/DVI monitor that is in the space sitting on a shelf, waiting for me to get some suitable caps to replace the dead ones. If I can't get them soon, I'll get rid of it.

i have a 20" .. 1600x1200 NEC LCD, the backlight blow up, made a huge
pop sound.
the pixels still work, you can shine a torch at it and see them operating.

Given that there are a number of offers for gear (in various states of repair) ... and rarely is the same person able to donate, repair and clean-up the junk ... and we are accumulating a bunch of stuff ...

Why don't we nominate an upcoming Saturday afternoon for ... the 3Rs (repair, recycle and remove) ?

This would be an opportunity to coordinate people bringing in (qualified) items, fixing them up ... and organizing a trip to the waste depot.  We'd need to ensure a balance in the number of people undertaking those activities so that we don't get overwhelmed in one area, e.g. lots of stuff, but little repair or remove.

It would be an opportunity for our members to learn about taking about and fixing things ... sometimes easier than realized with a little bit of experience.

How does the Saturday afternoon, 20th October sound ?

a) Could somebody in the community provide the use of their vehicle, if they have an appropriate vehicle with space for taking junk to the tip?

b) We really should get in touch with Marc and get him to give us/me all the information that he currently exists regarding the current status of fault diagnosis of the ultrasound machine, as well as any notes, documentation, repair information, service manual or any other knowledge he has on this subject. Because without any such information it isn't practical to move ahead in any constructive way with this so it's just taking up space.

I'm currently waiting for quotes from the e-waste disposal company I'm dealing with at work for both a mini-skip and large plastic bins.

This will mean a nominal cost for people to participate (we'll base it on how much interest we have) but nothing outlandish.

My suggestion is we couple this with a BBQ and membership drive.  I even have a miniature rotisserie spit we can use.

John Spencer has obtained 2 x DVI/VGA monitors, and will be bringing them in (hopefully before Saturday afternoon) and taking away the existing ones.
