Attention everyone for those who uses the Hackerspaces 3D printers
I have been noticing lately that the Frankenbot constanty having problems like skipping steps etc. I found a way to solve the problem well more like avoiding is by slowing down the printing speed by 5 mm/s on a custom new profile called "CCHS CNC Cupcake slow" so the steps would have better grip with the gears to avoid slipping.

Thanks for pointing out there are still issues with the Frankenbot.
The issue is that the way the belts attach to the x-y carriage. The way the
belts are held is not very good (& is a fault on all makerbot cupcakes).
The belt slides out of the attachment that is supposed to hold it. The bed
then rides on the edge of the belt, unless it encounters any friction at
all, making it look like it "skips" steps.
John B attempted to glue the belt to the carriage, however it looks like it
didn't hold.
Note for John: Thermal adhesive is NOT for any high-strength bond. The
stuff is very weak! It's designed to hold on small heat sinks, and doesn't
bond well to rubber. :P
Will look at it on Monday and see if we can make something better.

As a side note anyone that makes any changes to the Printers should make
sure they have checked that its ok to do so by someone who know the
printers well enough to ensure what they are doing is not going to damage
the machine no matter how sure you may think you are.
This means if you don't own your own printer with many prints under your
belt to really know what you are doing then best to leave setting changes
etc to the people who do.
We must remember that the access to these machines are there for all
members and as I have said in previous post that more often than not the
printers break down when people try to tweak them so try to remember how
much these machines are worth and the love and care that has gone into
creating them for the space.
Remember if you break it it's going to cost money and effect the every
member.

the print speed of the frankencake is limited to 20mm/s because the motors are way to small to get any more out of it any thing over this will cause missed steps. I have already dropped the micro stepping to 1/8 th steps just to make it work.(in the original makerbot format there was no micro stepping)
Last tuesday the skipping steps fault was found and it was the y belt was detached from the carriage and slipping at odd times.
I'm sure that it has come loose again.
I took the prusa home and it replaced the extruder motor with a more powerful one and it is good now . It completed a 3 hour print with no trouble

It would appear that the FrankenCake Y belt is still good (stuck down).
The FrankenCake was slipping in the X direction.
Richard did slow down the print by 5 mm/s and the model looked like it
was going to work (but take too many hours to print).
JohnB has also noted that some missing of steps can be caused by the
(incorrect) slicing of the model ... and not actually be a hardware problem.
We are reaching the point where if the CCHS 3D printers are used
carefully ... that the outstanding hardware issues have been dealt with.
Now, it may be time to ensure that the best way to perform model slicing
and machine set-up / use is conveyed to all interested CCHS members.
Is FrankenCake worth some bigger stepper, or will that just compound the
belt slipping. We could go to better/wider belts maybe. Will look tonight

Belts are already good GT2 and metal pulleys. Bigger motors will make it print a bit faster but the wooden construction and lack of real linear bearings and rails limits the machine some what.
I think we would benefit more from developing a Rostock for the space rather than spend too much more time on frankencake.
I am sure that the current problems are very minor.(loose screws and the like)
