Joke of the day:

When asked what consumers would print if they had a 3D printer, one reply was that he would print himself a car and the other was they would print themselves a house they could live in.

Nope, 3D printed cars could neeever happen...http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/02/3d-printed-car/

(Similar versions of this meme require a language warning but have a good punchline)

I predict that desktop printers will become a home/consumer device before long, and there'll be large-format/industrial speed/scale 3D printers where you can get stuff printed with the ease of getting a poster printed at your local Officeworks.
Furthermore, I think manufacturers (of cars and a range of other items) will simplify inventory and distribution by selling you a licensed copy of the STL file (or similar format) so you can print a replacement bumper/panel/cup-holder with the same ease as buying MP3 music or e-book today (but as likely to come from a walled garden and include DRM, proprietary gotchas, and a bignum page-long EULA).

Oh, don't get me wrong. I know the technology WILL exist to make it doable in the home. And soon.

I've seen the architect article before but the car one is new to me and rather awesome. Thanks for that.

What I found humorous is solely the fact that people RIGHT NOW think they could print out a car at home, print out a gun to kill someone or build themselves a 3D printed home. At home.

And also the lack of vision or creativity that leads people to saying Car or House as their first option.

I know it will be viable on a personal scale in the future but all I could picture was someone printing out Lego bricks and assembling them one at a time to build his house.

Jokes and jests aside, is anyone familiar with personal sintered steel/aluminum printers? I'm currently building myself an aluminum forge and thinking for great it would be to print in steel.
