I put my private key in /sdcard, with filename id_rsa.

When I open ConnectBot, click menu, manage keys, menu, import from file,

it offers me four files found in the root directory of /sdcard, none of which includes id_rsa. There are several other files there that don't appear.

What's the deal?

I just encountered this. Apparently /sdcard is the internal storage. An SD card in the slot is extSdCard (at least on my S3).

So you need to use your file app to copy the key from extSdCard to sdcard for ConnectBot to see it.  That worked fine for a id_dsa created in openssh in Linux.
