Subject: It's our anniversary!
To:
Friends and Creative Spirits,
I can't believe The Saartjie Project is almost 1 yrs old! That's amazing! I swear, at every performance I fall in love all over again with the women who make up The Saartjie Project.
We are super excited and humbled to be celebrating our anniversary onstage as part of the 2009 Capital Fringe Festival. Looking back over a year's worth of work, exploration, and pushing boundaries, we are busting out with our latest creation,
"Deconstructing the Myth of the
Booty"! It's something in it for everyone, and if you experienced The Saartjie Project before, you're in for a few surprises too.
Tell your friends, colleagues and loved ones about our upcoming performance, and be sure to check out some of the other performances at the festival. (Details below)
In light and creativity,
Jessica Solomon

The Saartjie Project is...- a boundary-stretching stage presentation that highlights the complex black + female experience.
- a collective named after Saartjie (Sara) Baartman, the South African woman who, in the 1800's, was given the show name "Hottentot Venus". She was eroticized and caged to show off her large buttocks to paying audiences. Upon her death her body was dissected and
displayed in a museum... and almost 200 years later her remains were finally laid to rest in her homeland.
Join us for 3 performances as we celebrate our ANNIVERSARY, Deconstruct the Myth of the Booty and honor the humanity of Saartjie through, song, drama, spoken word and visual art!

"I was awe struck and baptized by the beautiful, talented women who offered gifts from their souls and wombs all in an effort to describe what it means to be born human, female, covered in Black skin, and robbed of your true identity and humanity like Mama Saartjie."
"... I attended your performance and was truly moved and educated. I am a 65 years old and I had never heard
of Saartjie. This made me wonder about other great women in our history that I am ignorant to..."
