Having recently read M.R. Home and now starting Gilead, naturally put me on a little Internet search.

For two interesting pieces, you may be interested in her 5 minute interview on The Daily Show http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-july-8-2010/marilynne-robinson or this extended interview in the Paris Review http://www.theparisreview.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/5863

George,

Thanks for the connection to the two interviews with Marilynne
Robinson. It was something to see John Stewart in this kind of
exchange. He didn't do too badly, I thought. You may remember that we
had been in e-mail conversation with her in this Open Forum until a
bit of controversy developed....

Gilead was part of my summer reading list and I especially appreciated
the look at ministry in a small Iowa town from a first-person
perspective. Of course, the fact that I am serving a congregational
church in small town Iowa made it a very familiar setting. I hope
that you enjoy it as much as I did.

Unfortunately her interview on the Daily Show was not Marilyne at her
best. However, I am still very much looking forward to reading her
new book Absence of Mind. My wife is writing her dissertation on a
very similar subject and I can't wait to see how their thoughts
compare.

Enjoy the reading!
Mike

Hi Gabe,

I vaguely remember the discusssion.  Not familiar with the controversy.

I. too thought she did well on John Stewart, for what that show is.  More significantly, I thought John Stewart showed some real insight in his comments on the relationship between scientific and religious modes of thinking.

Best,

George

George,

I have to agree with you about John Stewart. He actually seemed to have been familiar with some basic concepts that she put in the book. I happen to like Terry Gross as an interviewer on PBS's FRESH AIR that comes out of Philidelphia. She is one of the few people who interview for a living that seems to actually prepare thoroughly but John surprised me. Yes, the interveiw was brief and on a comedy show but as G. K. Chesterton said:

“Mr. McCabe thinks that I am not serious but only funny,

because Mr. McCabe thinks that funny is the opposite of serious.

Funny is the opposite of not funny and nothing else.”

Stewart's last question to her was "Whose right?" and she answered "I am." She has a good sense of humor and it worked on the show. Not everyone can handle Stewart. Yet it seemed that he was positive toward her from the beginning.
