Confessors,

If you check the internet for obituaries for Donald Bloesch, some interesting relections on his life and theological work come up.

I checked the old church baptismal records of our church, and found his name recorded as having been baptized in the First Evangelical Church, Bremen Indiana while his father, Herbert Bloesch was a pastor here.  The records state:  Donald George Bloesch, born, May 3, 1928, baptized, June 24, 1928.  It is great to search old church records and see the connection of the communion of the saints.  I announced this historical information prior to our prayers on Sunday morning.

Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses,

Tom Dean

Tom,

Thank you for this information.  I included it in my appreciation on my  blog:  http://richardlfloyd.blogspot.com/2010/08/donald-bloesch-appreciation.html

I think his remaining all these years in the UCC, despite his lover's quarrel with it, is a testimony to his view of church.  It is ironic that he was valued greatly outside our denomination.

Also, the Christianity Today article about him quotes Gabe at length.

A cloud of witnesses indeed.

Rick,

I'm glad I found the baptismal information which you were able to incorporate into your appreciation.  It's a thoughtful reflection on his life drawing upon the historical background of the UCC.  I always enjoy reading your blog.  It's one I've bookmarked to see what you are thinking.  You might want to put many of them together some day in book form.

I look forward to reading the Christianity Today article which quotes Gabe at length.  Who knows if a greater good may come from these reflections of a major, solid  theologian who remained with the UCC.

Keep up the good blogging,

Tom

Rick,

I've been looking for the Christianity Today article about Donald Bloesch which quotes Gabe at length.  I didn't find anything in the recent magazine.  Is it something on-line?   Please let me know where to find it.

Thanks,

Tom
