I have been experimenting with the "public domain" version of Xming, but there is an issue with display allocation. Basically the server will silently fail to start up if the requested display number is already in use. You can workaround this by choosing different numbers until it starts successfully.
There is a comment in the release notes about automatic display allocation being fixed in "website release" version 7.5.0.40 (Released 30 Sep 2011), but it specifically mentions that this is related to XDMCP, which I am not using.
Can someone confirm whether or not the paid version fixes the the general display allocation problem?
