Is it possible to use only bitmap fonts on a semi-recent X11 server
(X.Org X Server 1.4.2 from 2008)?

I've symlinked the 'yes-bitmaps' file from 'conf.available' to 'conf.d',
so the server sees the bitmap fonts.

I'm also trying to "hide" the TTF fonts by renaming those TTF and Type1
directories that X will be so smart as to scan no matter what one wrote
in xorg.conf.

Problem is, while e.g. bitmap Helvetica is found by xfontsel, Gtk apps
like Firefox3 won't see it. How would I go about using bitmaps fonts for
everything, if at all possible?

TIA!

Gtk and its ilk don't use X for font selection. They use fontconfig and
render the fonts client-side with freetype.

The simplest way to force everything to use bitmaps is to delete any
Type1 or Truetype fonts from the system.
