xfig, ghostview, gv pull-down menus stopped working

Hi folks,

I've STFW but haven't found an answer, so I hope someone here knows.

I can no longer select items with the mouse in the pulldown
menus in xfig, ghostview, and gv. I have tried toggling NumLock
(as suggested by one or two ancient posts) but that has no effect.

I used xfig successfully about three weeks ago, and I'm not sure
what changed here that caused it to break. Rebuilt it with Xaw
instead of Xaw3d, but no change.

System is:

OS: FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE Wed Apr 1 23:48:36 PDT 2009
X: xorg-7.3_2

Any ideas?
