After seeing the recent question about SCIM and Motif, I couldn't
believe that it was that bad. I couldn't believe that things wouldn't
work as they should. So, I kept my eyes open, and I discovered that
there is an example program shipped with IST's version of Open Motif,
and probably with other Motif 2.1 distribution as well. It is called
i18ninput, and it demonstrates internationalization on Motif. In fact,
it works flawlessly right out of the box with SCIM, without any special
tweaking.

I just make sure that my LANG variable is set to a suitable UTF-8 based
locale, and then, SCIM works without a hitch in i18ninput. This
indicates to me that the other Motif applications where this does not
work may simply not support this sort of input. I have not examined the
source code yet for this program, but perhaps it's a simple matter of
making sure that the right input methods are defined.

Good news!
