Looks odd to me, I'd never think to pop an nfs mountpoint in /var.

Not saying you're wrong, doesn't seem right to do that.  But I
cannot recall if I've read anything saying _not_ to do that.

Maybe something wrote important state into to the mountpoints
that became buried by the NFS when it was mounted later?

Check for files on the mountpoint with NFS imports unmounted,
I've been known to write stuff to the mountpoint and not notice
until the mountpoint ran out of space.  Oops... :o)
