Hi folks,

compared with KDE-2.2.1 on a Linux kernel 2.4.18, Intel 800MHz, the
performane of KDE-3.5.4 on a Linux kernel 2.6.5, Intel 1.8GHz, appears
*not* to be as responsive as the older KDE-2.2.1.
KDE-3.5.4 has been build with konstruct w/o problems.

Starting a XSession takes about 20 sec on both KDE versions.
Various other KDE-3.5.4 apps appear to react with some ms delay,
eg. logging out, open K-menu, etc.

This is surprising, as KDE-3-5.4 is running on a more that 2 times
faster HW as old KDE.

Any hints?

Thanks for reading
Wolf

I venture to guess that the different versions of KDE were built with
different hardware in mind. Therefore, it's natural to expect that KDE has
matured (read: gotten bloated). Personally I run KDE 3.4 on 256 MB of RAM
with great convenience. Have you considered a more lightweight KDE desktop?
I suspect that there are KDE derivatives which would be snappier. Also,
remember that KDE can be easily customised to improve performance. I have
seen various pages about this. Here is another relevant page:

Check to see (e.g. using KSysGuard or top) if some off process is slowing
down (CPU) your more modern machines or eats up a lot of RAM, which leads to
paging.
