how 2 get apps to use kde phonon sound?

I'm struggling to get a TerraTec DMX-6Fire-USB external soundcard to work.

As far as KDE is concerned it seems to be OK and shows up in the Phonon
list where it is set as primary/default

KDE system alerts all use it, so does Audacity which allows me to set
the sound card I want but most even strictly KDE aps like kdenlive
remain silent. A sample *.mpg plyaback for example will play with
sound ONLY if I use Dragon Player.

Also, would it be possible to show the devices in a tree so that it
might be less confusing? What the image shows is pretty cheesy
