Right click on the 'Start' or 'Launch' button and up comes the edit menu.
Every item is accompanied by three check boxes, one of which reads 'Place in
system tray'. I believe this is identical in KDE4 as KDE3, the only
difference being that it doesn't work. Why on earth hasn't it been removed
if it is incompatible with the panel/plasma scenario? Hardly a sign of
polish?

Only available if you have widgets unlocked. I have the problem that,

as soon as I open a program from the "Launch" button, the hide taskbar
feature refuses to work and I am left with a visible task bar hiding
the bottom section of the screen and the bottom of full-screen of
large-windowed applications.
I am using KDE4 and OpenSUSE 11.4, 32 bit version.

No it does not. Why not? What's the point of having New Item if it
does not work? I use KDE 4.7.2 with siduction (based on Debian sid).

This also once has driven me nuts. It's a well-known bug. This problem

is solved with KDE 4.7.3. I'm using KDE 4.7.4 (with as much akonadi
nonsense turned off) under openSuSE 12.1, and there all this works very
well. The menu is updated when installing/removing new software from the
repository as well as when you add/remove entries to/from the menu by hand.
