I need to use XS3 for my display on my Linux box, and I had heard it wasn't
terribly compatible with Xfree 1.2. Nevertheless, many programs that are
too big (read: little disk space) for me to compile myself come as binaries
linked to the 1.2 libraries. I would then like to use the 1.2 distribution,
but I'm worried that combining it with XS3 would break too much.

Very few individuals from 386bsd or Linux re-compile X programs for XS3.
The XS3 binary distribution includes only the server and not the clients.
On 386bsd, I use the Xfree 1.2 X clients :-)
