Xwin server slow and jumpy !?

We are running a SVR4.2 (Consensys) with its supplied X server (Xwin).
When running certain X applications the Xwin server turns *very*
slow and jumpy when i e moving a window around the screen.
The slownes remains even after terminating the application !!!???

After logging out and in (probably resetting the server) the problem
dissapears. I have an X-terminal connected via ehernet to the very
same machine that does not indicate the problem.
Two appl causing this problem is xearth and ghostview-1.5.
Has anyone else seen this ?
Can anyone point out an ftp site/path where one can find Xfree-1.3
binary for SVR4.2 ?
