On the other hand (plug plug), if all you need is a small widget
instead of the whole detailed image, you can have "xmoondial"
(available from ftp.huji.ac.il, directory pub/misc/amos/xmoondial). It
displays a moon-phase dial, like the one found in astronomical clocks
and some expensive watches.

There's another application called xmoontool, which calculates the current phase,
distances from sun and earth and all that.

And then there is xephem, the Cadillac of them all.

Constellations, sky view, conjunctions, a huge star catalog, dial it
back to 4 AD, the works.
