In searching with archie for tools to solve my Answerbook
access problem, I have discovered several archives with
.gz for an ending. I am accustomed to seeing .Z, meaning
compress worked on the file.

So how do I handle .gz files?

Thanks.

This is certainly the wrong group for this question, but how could you
know that? .gz-files are files compressed with gnu's gzip. Simply get
gzip unless it's allready installed on your system and do:
gzip -d file.gz

have fun

First off, thanks to all who sent me replys here, and by private mail.
I have located gzip and got it installed on my system.

But now two quick questions (perhaps with the same answer):

1) Where would have been a better place to ask my original question
about .gz files?

2) Where should I ask questions about effective searching of the net
for archives? (I have only mail access to the net, not FTP, so it is
complicated.)

Again, thanks.

.gz or sometimes .z entails a gnu gzip compressed file.

Get the gzip package from your fav ftp server.
