My wife has a pretty ancient laptop that she quit using for a couple
of years and now can't recall the password for it. This was given to
her as a hand-me-down from a friend and so doesn't have any system
boot disks or the like. There is some data on the hard drive that
she'd like (old writings and photos).

The system is running Windows 2000 Professional. Can anyone suggest a
way to recover data from a hard drive in a laptop in a case like this?

My first thought was to try booting from a Linux CD and see if I could
mount the hard drive using DOS tools and then ftp files to another
local computer. However - the laptop has no CD drive! Just a floppy
drive. I could look for a way to make a bootable floppy but I haven't
even owned a floppy disk in at least a decade.

What do the pro's do for data recovery in a situation like this? We
don't care about actually using the laptop, we just want to recover
files from its hard drive.

Thanks for any tips.

In article <7999f877-45d7-469f...@d19g2000prh.googlegroups.com>,

Reset the password using a bootable linux floppy like:
