SIGIO and sockets
Hi: I'm trying to write a program that receives I/O on many sockets. I want the program to be notified by the kernel via SIGIO and I want the kernel to also to tell the program which descriptor the I/O condition has changed on. Solaris 2.7 man pages say the __data.__file.__fd field is not available for... more »

world wide web
[please forward to any tech geek who needs to hear it] How does Usenet propagate? Many posters are not technically educated. The comp.unix.wizards, etc., need to look out for them and to look out for censorship that is apparently the rage these days. Usenet is both easy to censor and hard to censor. The... more »

Advanced KORN or BASH Shell scripting question...
Hey there, I am trying to do some funky stuff with a Korn or Bash shell script. See snippet... -- START -- Var_Prefix="Data_To_" Var_Suffix="Echo" Data_To_Echo="Hello World" echo $($Var_Prefix$Var_Suffix) -- END -- Now what I want to happen is for the last line echo $($Var_Prefix$Var_Suffix) to echo to the user "Hello World" and not just the... more »

Signals: signal chaining within handlers
Hi. Knowing that sigaction(2) will provide me with the 'old' signal disposition, if another routine before me inserted a signal handler for say, SIGPIPE, my sigaction(2) will give me the address of this previously installed signal handler. So, then, in my signal handler, because I installed my signal handler after the one that was installed previously, can, or should,... more »

Q. HP-UX 10 - Mounting CD's and getting Long File Names to Work
At work we use Linux to cut CD's with mkisofs and cdrecord. This works for all Unixes that we have tested, except for HP-UX which has a problem showing the long file names from the Rock Ridge extensions. mkisofs is used with the flag -R and -J to create both Rock Ridge and Joliet extensions so that our customes can mount our CD's on the Unix... more »

Telnet terminal (developer) help needed
We run a small development server using red hat linux 6.1. We have some questions regarding telnet terminals, mud clients, and doing interesting things in terminal windows - as well as platform/client compatability. The basic idea is to create some colored, text-based theatrics for our moo-server log in, preferably without resorting to basic page scrolling... more »
