ping www.sun.com ===>> unknown host www.sun.com: What 1 cmd fixes it?
All was working fine (firefox browsing, etc) when I took it down; brought it up, and I get this. No change in cables; other computers on same modem-thing browse just fine. To tell the truth, I'd had the machine "up" ever since a friend (now unreachable) got me all set up. That recent takeing-down was the FIRST time down since way back then.... more »

Can anyone give me a free account on fast SPARC hardware ?
Following my other question about buying cheap SPARC hardware, I might as well ask - there is no harm in asking. Is there anyone that can give me a *free* shell account on *fast* SPARC hardware to support a major open-source project [link] I've already got a Blade 2000 with 2 x 1.2 GHz, so it needs to be quicker than... more »

Fast cheap SPARC hardware.
Are there any options for fast single threaded SPARC hardware at a cheap price (say under £500) used? I have a Blade 2000 (2 x 1.2 GHz), [link] and will no doubt at some point find someone putting a Blade 2500 (2 x 1.6 GHz) [link]... more »

Ultra 27 / OpenSolaris 06/2009. Keyboard layout randomly changes
I'm getting a bit fed up with this. Every now and then (few days), the monitor is displaying different characters to what I intend typing. Shift-3 displays a #, not a £, as I expect on my UK keyboard Shift-2 displays @ rather than ", as I expect on my UK keyboard. I've got no idea what starts this annoying behavior. Logging out and back in... more »

Solaris kernel - runs on CPU0, or all CPUs?
It was old unix knowledge I received a long long time ago that said that the Solaris kernel ran only on CPU0. Nowadays, when I look deep at a Solaris 10 x86 system, I'm not so sure I am seeing that any more. For example, we have an application that is extremely SYS heavy (unoptimized code) that calls time-related functions a lot, which... more »
