Live Upgrade to Migrate a UFS Root File System to a ZFS Root File System
I'm trying to update a machine running Solaris 10 update 4 with a UFS root file system to one running Solaris 10 update 7 with a ZFS boot file system. I've looked at [link] The example uses the syntax: ...done what it said and created a ZFS storage pool with a a slice.... more »

A couple of disk label SMI (VTOC) / EFI questions.
A couple of questions I hope someone can help me with, with regard to Solaris 10 on SPARC. 1) How do I determine if a disk has a SMI (VTOC) label (therefore suitable for ZFS boot) or EFI label? I thought 'format' would show me this, but if it does, I can't see where to find it. 2) If it does have a EFI label, how can I convert it to a SMI (VTOC)... more »

The SPARC 10u6 & later miniroot
Does anyone know how this works? This is the thing that can be found in boot/sparc.miniroot on the install DVD. This looks like a UFS disk image. So, on a SPARC box I made it available as a device using lofiadm, used fstyp / fsck to check it really was a UFS image, and mounted it (r/o). You get what is pretty... more »

Network Card - Recommendations
I just built a new fileserver with an Atheros L1E Lan controller and it's not being recognized by OpenSolaris. Can anyone recommend a network card that the OS will be able to utilize without too much of a problem? Thanks.

Path issue when executing commands remotely
When I try and execute a command which sits in /usr/sbin on a remote machine, for some reason it cannot find it: ssh user1@<remote-hosts> ifconfig -a sh: ifconfig: not found But when I do ssh user1@<remote-hosts> ls This works! When I log on to the remote machine as that user1 and run ifconfig -a it works, and /usr/sbin is in the path. I have tried setting it in /... more »

Is it safe to copy /usr/ccs/bin/as from old Solaris 10 release to new one?
I'm using a T5240 running Solaris 10 update 4 for some software development - trying to port the maths package Sage to Solaris SPARC. I also personally own a Sun Blade 2000 with Solaris 10 update 6 on it. I notice that whilst /usr/ccs/bin/ld (the linker) is the same on both update 4 and 6, the assembler (/usr/ccs/bin/as) has changed.... more »
