Subject: Can a 146.8 GB Fujitsu Hard Drive be Installed in a Sun Blade 2500 (Red)?
Hi,

I have a question for the forum.

We need to add a really large partition to store a database on a Sun
Blade 2500(red). I would like to add a couple of 146GB drives from
Fujitsu or Hitachi which are 80 pin U320 hot swappable just like the
73GB Fujitsu drives that came with the system. Now I know the 73GB
drives in the system have Sun firmware for the OBP to recognize.

Will the larger drives work in this system? What other options are
available if said drives will not work? Can a NFS partition spread
across physical drives? I'm using Solaris 10 fully patched. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

James

They should I believe
(pretty sure).
As you're talking about plain SCSI drives you shouldn't expect problems.
As opposed to FC-AL: Those fiber optical drives NEED to have the proper
firmware in order to be compatible with the host-builtin FC-AL
controller chip I think.
However - I believe one can even upgrade the
SunBlade1000/2000/SunFire280R/Netra20 system to certain 146GB
Sun/Seagate FC-AL
drives, while Sun used to mention and support a only maximum size of 73GB.
Is that true???
Could someone please CONFIRM this?

In the worst case just get some fast IDE drives (smaller than around
128GB each) and connect them to CMD_649 / Sil0649 based PCI UATA-100
Dual IDE
Controllers / RAID Controllers {i.e."SiiG SC-PE4A12"
See:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%22SC-PE4A12%22&btnG=Search   }.
Drivers are builtin from some Sol8 or Sol9 Update on (yes, on SPARC).
If you're running Sol10 or 11(SolExpress) they're included in any
circumstances.

Other options include the use of external USB2 drives, FireWire, or - at
least very soon - SATA.

I was thinking the same thing about the SCSI controller and the OS
certainly be able to read blocks that high. Also I mention NFS
partition, but I meant UFS in my previous post.

Thank you for the lead on Siig SC-PE4A12 controller. This gives me
something to fall back on. We plan to purchase a pair of Hitachi 15K
drives and try that first. I will post the outcome here. If it does not
work then we will install the IDE controller.
