I see that there's a brand-new (well, October) release
of solaris-10.

COOL! First, before deciding on anything, let's see what
nifty NEW FEATURES there might be.

So, here's the url for: "Solaris 10 10/09 Release Notes":

http://dlc.sun.com/pdf/821-0381/821-0381.pdf

150 pages long, and it seems like very single page concerns some
warning or bug.

NOTHING, in the table of contents, at least, about new features,
enhancements, etc.

From a cursory reading of the table of contents, all that appears
to have happened is the introduction of a jillion new bugs and
danger-situations! (Because that's all they seem to mention
there -- problem after problem after problem.)

Maybe Sun mis-named (mis-titled?) from "problems" to
"release notes", and somewhere hidden away there sits
the *real* "release notes"?

Anyway, I'm puzzled. Where is there doc on the new
features, something you read that will make you gung-ho
to install or upgrade to it?

(Probably, as usual, the answer you guys provide will (as usual)
turn out to have been staring me in the face all along! So
thanks so very much for tolerating my silly questions all these
years. Sincerely, David)

----

Now, you gotta see my next post, about my playing-dead Blade-2500(red).
You'll never guess the fix!

Thanks,

David

Thanks to both of you!

(I'm used to new features, etc, bugs-not-fixed, ..., being in
a file called "release notes". With sun, it's "What's new"
that one looks or googles for. Thanks)

So, I got that what's-new pdf, and was rather surprised
that there was nothing there about new zfs features.

In fact, I didn't see anything that would make me want
to upgrade to it?

(Clearly, that opinion is crazy, so what am I not seeing?
Or seeing but not thinking it important?)

Thanks,

David

Look at the "ZFS Features and Changes" section on page 10, it lists 7
new ZFS features and changes:

ZFS and Flash installation support
Setting ZFS user and group quotas
Using ZFSACL pass through inheritance for execute permission
Using cache devices in your ZFS storage pool
ZFS property enhancements
ZFS log device recovery
Using ZFS ACL Sets

The "ZFS and Flash installation support", "Setting ZFS user and group
quotas" and "Using ZFS ACL Sets" are enough to make me want to
upgrade.
