Folks,

Is it possible to add/build /var to a Solaris local zone as a separate
filesystem/dataset to root ( / )

TIA

It is possible, but I don't think it's supported so you might run into
problems with upgrades.

Of course it works. I have always done it, and would regard it as plain
stupid to do otherwise. The root partition should be a amall space
containing only the essentials. /var should be somewhere where it can grow
arbitrarily large and even overflow without breaking anything else.

I also have it useful to have a separate partition /var-nodump, to which
everything on /var that you can afford to lose can be soft-linked. Then
your incremental dumps can be kept down to a reasonable size.
Contrarisiwse, the genuine root stuff should be the first priority for
backing up.

With zones and live upgrade? The arguments over to var or not to var
are moot if your zone root is a decent sized partition. Creating a
separate partition for zone vars is just silly.
