Has anyone here managed to cajule Totem (the multimedia player
that comes with GNOME/JDSv3) into playing DVDs? The closest
I've managed to get is a File Manager window being opened. Not
exactly riveting viewing! (It plays CDs just fine, although the
user interface leaves a lot to be desired when compared to Ti Kan's
xmcd.)
I know I can install Ogle or the like, but I'd rather use the stuff
that comes with Solaris if possible.
This is using build 72 of S10 on SPARC, BTW.
Cheers, and happy new year to all!

I don't think JDSv3 comes with a css decryption library (??).
Did you "obtain" one?

Rich raises a good question, Is Sun going to provide a commercial
licensed piece of software that will decode dvds?? In general this
is a tall order since it's very easy for Unix folks to uses
the decryption routines to do "other" things.
I could very easily predict the answer from Sun being... get
a separate DVD player... or use SunPCI Windoze thang.

Though I know you would never do this <cough>, some might
attempt to compile libdvdcss2 and use that <cough>... but
that's only those worried about violating some kind of
federal law :)

Rich lives in Canada where the MPAA has somewhat less of a financial
influence on the legislators.

Nope; just what's in the build 72 ISOs.

I hope so...

Which is fine - but then don't include Totem! If a piece of sofwtare
is supplied that purports to do something, it should DO that something!

In this instance, the law be damned! I bought those DVDs, so I have
the right to view them at my convenience. (If they had all this encryption
and "zone" BS, can you imagine how unpopular audio Cds would have been?
And the industry is whining over lost royalties at the same time they're
making it harder for kosher customers to use their product...)
Two hours to go (until midinight), so I'm going back to watching
the Live Aid DVDs. Brings back great memories.
Happy New Year, all!
Xine works together with libDecss, you only have to be root.
Xine could be made working on Solaris 9 & 10 by incorporating
libscg (from cdrtools) and using the Remote SCSI to local devices.
The problem with Cine is that it does mnot have a clean interface to
device names and file descriptors. This would cause a bit work
to make it work as non root.

First.. I agree with you totally. But I'm afraid that according to
the MPAA, you bought a piece of media that requires external
enablement (in fact, I'd go so far at to say, an enablement that
is good for ONE play ONLY and then must be reenabled). Futhermore,
the MPAA had the right over which parts of the media you can watch,
skip through, etc. Apparently, when we all bought that DVD, we
missed the massive warning label... oops... they must have forgot
to put it on the box!
My NEC 3500A has been "fixed"... I highly recommend the unit.
Haven't tested it under Solaris yet... but shouldn't be a problem.
necflash is your friend. No more region worries and I think I
may have variable booktype (not sure).

I haven't tried JDSv3 on Solaris yet (I'm beta test for the Linux one
though), the <cough> solution previously mentioned will work there
and probably for Solaris as well...
