Having used c.u.s.m for years, I don't know what "newsgroups" mean
in the AT&T announcement:

"Please note that on or around July 15, 2009, AT&T will no longer
be offering access to the Usenet netnews service," said AT&T on
the company's Usenet servers.

Does that mean that after that date when I go to Thunderbird and
click "manage newsgroup subscriptions" I won't see the headers
and be able to navigate to a newsgroup that I want to visit?

It means that you won't be able to get it from AT&T. You can use
Google Groups, (which I use), or find another NNTP provider.

Spam and network abuse and legal issues have made NNTP much more
awkward to support for a big company unwilling to wield a personal
battle axe and cut off nonsense groups mercillessly or to accept
cancel messages from respected sources. So it's understandable with so
many people using blogs and Wiki's today that they'd discard NNTP.

I think for most readers it's a big "who cares". You would be the
exception, as your account is on att.net and your postings have
"@att.net" message IDs. For you, this probably means you have to find a
different news server (or overall Internet provider, if this is enough
to push you off the deathstar...)

Specifically for the SCO groups, it's possible to get an email
subscription and never actually use USENET or NNTP protocols at all.

Thank's guys. I long ago signed up for e-mail delivery of the c.u.s.m newsgroup
and used to post via nntp through my e-mail program. I then signed up through
jpr.com to post and don't use the news reader function in Thunderbird.

My confusion stems from the AT&T notice that assumes that everyone reading
the announcement would KNOW what "access to the Usenet netnews service" means
to the reader (in my case, I drew a blank as that's at the nuts and bolts
level for something I set up once and have not had to touch in years).

Had I checked my account settings for news -> server settings and saw
that it specifies news.kc.sbcglobal.net I might have made the connection that
on 7/15 news.kc.sbcglobal.net will no longer provide nntp services.
