How vi create tmp file in /tmp directory

Hello, I noticed that most of time while opening file bigger than 300MB vi throws error that "tmp file too large.". Is there any way to remove this error apart from increasing size of / tmp directory. I mean can't I specify to vi that use other directory for creating / tmp file. Two beginner questions about archiving on Unix: 1. How reliable are tar and gzip compared to commercial archiving products? 2. Assuming space is not an issue, is there any benefit in storing compressed data? In other words, would my text, pdf, audio files "keep" any better being tar'd and gzip'd first?... more »

crontab skipping scheduled executions

I have a crontab file which is supposed to execute certain script on regular basis. However quite often it skips that execution. question about PBS stdout and stderr

Hi all, When I submit the following script, the stdout/stderr file is empy: ...bash ...walltime=00:10:00 ...nodes=1:ppn=2 ...test ...oe ...bash cd $PBS_O_WORKDIR ./simnametest However, when I submit the script with ppn=1, the stdout/stderr file is not empty.
