what I have to pay attention if I use mmap to r/w register under Mips

Dear all:
I try to use mmap to mapping Hw registers and r/w them under Mips.
Are there "must" functions or flags I should use when open "/dev/mem"
and r/w it?
Since my program ramdomly will let the kernel crash, sometimes it
will show unalignment exception and sometimes it dead without anything
shows up.
