timidity from terminal

Hi,
I can play a midi-file with
$ timidity file.mid
only if I type that command on the keyboard connected directly to PC.
But from a terminal (dec vt420) I get no error message but no sound at
all. This behaviour is the same doing it as user or as root.
How can I control the sound output from terminal?
