Greetings, kinda new to FBSD, yet comfortable with computers... This
problem is however a little beyond me.

Essentially I was given an Intergraph workstation. (TDZ2000 GT1)
Simply a dual 700Mhz PIII that has a Symbios 53C896 and a Symbios
53C860 built in.

FBSD 4.9 (generic) can see the hardware (896), and yet FBSD 6.1
(generic) can't. I've been poking around with this for ages, and I
can't get it.. Thus I'm asking for help!

On the 6.1 dmesg, it appears that the computer misses a host PCI
bridge.. somehow skipping from pcib1 to pcib3.. Which I think is odd.
And of course, that's the same bus that the 896 is on..

Thus I have 6.1 up and running on a 2GB scsi HD, (from the 860) however
I would like to use the 896 since it's faster and I actually have HD's
with reasonable sizes on there. ;) (FBSD4.9 is installed and running
from the 896 controller, however without SMP.)

So, I'm looking to see if anyone has any insights, help, or simply
guesses! Pardon the long post.

6.1 dmesg (-v)

i have an LSI (fka: SymBIOS) 876 and 2 810's working in 5.4
what does "pciconf -vl" show? curious.

without getting too crazy hacking together pieces of 4.x to get it to
work, i'd try the suggestion in the man page on using a kernel option to
attach a different driver to it (ncr).

ie. add:
options SYM_SETUP_LP_PROBE_MAP=0x04

to your kernel config and recompile.

see "man sym"

for the option to be there in the first place it's probably a known
issue with some cards/revisions.

Thank-you both for your replies.

Currently 4.11 sees the bridge (and anything on pci2), and thus the
896. 5.0 doesn't. That is a lot of changes with regards to the two
different versions!

good. ;)

Is there anyway to set this as a boot variable? With a 2GB drive,
space is kinda tight for a whole source tree. (More storage is an
option, however...)

I had a look at the man page of sym, yet it's odd that I don't see
anything for or about PCI 2 in the dmesgs.. I recently put in a qlogic
2200, and again, on FBSD 4.9 it sees the card (on PCI2), and 6.1
doesn't see that bus. I think there's something up with regards to the
CPU - PCI and PCI - PCI bridges. (For this machine at the least.)

:/

Once I get some more storage, I can install the source tree and
_attempt_ (whole new can of worms!) to make buildkernel with the
SYM_SETUP_LP_PROBE_MAP=0x04 option.

no. not that i know of at least.

/usr/src--> du -d1 -h
<snip>
104M ./sys
<snip>

i hope you have 150 megs or so free. it's not /that/ big for a base
install. sys is all you need anyway for just the kernel.
untar the ssys.?? from the CD by mounting the cd and:
cat /cdrom/6.1-RELEASE/src/ssys.?? | tar --unlink -xpzfv - -C /usr/src

alt:
use cvsup (/usr/ports/net/cvsup-without-gui) for a more current tree.
in particular /usr/share/example/cvsup/standard-supfile
change the CHANGE_THIS.freebsd.org to cvsup#.freebsd.org where #=a
number (ie 3 or 4 or 5 etc.). it doesn't much matter.
then just comment out all but sys from the sources to fetch and run
cvsup as the examples show. if you're very limited on space like you
say then option one may be best (to test with at least).

see the handbook for kernel config and compile instructions.

move the "non-working" one to a different slot maybe?
i doubt that'll help though.

good luck. let us know if you get it working.

*sweet* I dropped the QLogic card to the bottom pci slot, and it shows
up on pci3! *so* much more room to move around! (1Gb/sec fibre, 8 x
18GB drive array, not mine, but not currently in use.. so anyhoo..)
Weee...

As for the 896, (and the 890) they're on the mobo.. No moving them
around too much. :)

Thanks for the device hint ;) and your time.

I seem to have a very similar problem with the Micron 6200, but cannot
seem to get past the install boot (2ndary). Can you drop into the boot
loader and set a hint or kernel variable to force the probe map?? I'm not
far enough along to be able to config/recompile the kernel on the target
box ... as the install fails ...

Well, compiling the kernel went well, and the ncr device is loaded into
memory, and the flag was set, however there's no ncr device. I'm quite
certain that the bridge is what is being missed. I started a new
thread in this group with regards to that (the missing bridge).

Thank-you for your time and suggestion(s).
