Hi folks,

I tried to install a 16-port Async. adapter on a RS/6000 Model 595 but when
I wanted to install
the device driver "devices.mca.edd6" using SMIT, the following error
messages appeared:

0301-153 bosboot: /unix not found.
Installation or updating script is unable to continue.
0503-407 installp: An error occurred during boosboot processing.
Please correct the problem and rerun installp.

So, I went to check /unix which is actually linked to
/usr/lib/boot/unix_up. As far as I know this
is the kernel file and to my amazement, the /usr/lib/boot/unix_up is zero
in size! (See below)
How could this be?

# pwd
/
# ls -al unix
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 21 Mar 3 1997 unix ->
/usr/lib/boot/unix_up
# cd /usr/lib/boot
# pwd
/usr/lib/boot
# ls -al unix_up
---x--x--x 1 root system 0 Jul 7 1997 unix_up

At first, I thought it has something to do with the permission bits so I
chmod 777 unix_up and
tried again but I still got the same error message as above.

I would really appreciate it if someone could explain what's happening to
my system and how
do I go about solving this?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure how it happend. But to fix it, I would boot off your mksysb
(hopefully you have this) and retore the unix_up or unix_mp file off
the tape.

Hi Zondin,
I don't know how it happened either, although it could have been that
the file system filled up and the file got screwed up that way. Anyway,
if you do not have a MKSYSB(which ALL good sys-admin have :-), you can
get it off another system running the 'same' level AIX.
Hope this helps and not hinders,

My experience tells me that it needs to be not only the same level of O/S, but
also the *exact* same type of machine and the same configuration! Be careful.

If you do not have a mksysb, a safer thing to do would be in install the
bos.rte.up fileset onto the system again, you should then run bosboot -ad
/dev/hdiskx where x is the disk with the boot logical volume.
