Any help on this is much appreciated. A customer bought a few months
ago two new Power6 520 from some hardware dealer, but did not buy a
HMC. The systems were delivered in LPAR mode, with 1*VIO and 2*LPAR's
each.
The System management was done throught Websm on the VIO server.
In January they bought a HMC, and the hardware reseller did not
connect the
two 520's to the HMC, because: The systems need to be reinstalled, and
he
virtually ran away after scaring the customer that all their LPAR's
would have to be destroyed.
The technician of the hardware dealer did not leave any
documentation how the systems and LPAR's were installed.
The redpaper 3999 http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpapers/pdfs/redp3999.pdf
gave the impression that connecting a server to the HMC would be
pretty straightforward.
So I did all the steps described in the redp399.pdf and in
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/wikis/display/virtualization/HMC+and+System+Setup
The result is pretty disappointing:
- The network seems to be good. The HMC sees the 520.
- The new managed server however stays in Recovery mode. Since this a
new HMC, and there is no partition backup, it is only possible to use
the "Initialize". See
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/index.jsp?topic=/iphch/iphchaddhmc.htm
- The two LPAR's do not boot anymore after connecting the HMC
- The VIO server boots, but the previously working Websm does not work
anymore,
it gives error 404 on the browser .
- Because Websm does not work and the HMC can not manage the system,
it is not possible to find out why the non VIO LPAR's are not
booting.
Maybe the LPAR's do not boot because they are trying to find out what
their console is. The ASMI port changed due to the added HMC.
Questions:
1 What is the most effective way to resolve this ?. I hope destroying
the LPAR configuration is not the only option here, although there are
some posts hinting that the 520 is not so HMC-friendly.
Maybe documenting the current VIO configuration as good as possible.
The LPAR rootvg's are on local disk of the 520. Initialize the LPAr
configuration, define VIO and two LPAR's, Then cross fingers and hope
the newly defined VIO lpar will boot from the existing disk of the
current VIO server ?.
All info is much appreciated.
you were using IVM and want to switch to HMC.
procedure is in http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/redp4061.html

Hi,
Thx very much !!!, this worked like a dream.
The procedure in chapter 5 of the redbook is very easy to implement.
There is a lot of conflicting information on this subject, but this
redbook does do the job.
