What's the latest version of AIX I can stick on this machine? I was given a set
of AIX 5.1 CD-R's some time back, but I've seen a set of 8 CDs for 5.3 on eBay
for next to nothing.
I'm just wondering
a) What is the latest the machine, which I believe is 32-bit, will run?
b) The legality of putting a later release on it. (It's only a home computer, so
I don't suppose IBM are going to go after me with all guns blazing.)
I've not switched it on for about 5 years, so I'll do a test of it first, to
make sure it still boots. I know it has 3 x 4.5 GB disks in it, which I think
I'll throw out and put something a bit larger in. I've got several 18 and 36 GB
disks lying around.

AIX 5.3 will support your F50 if you have your firmware updated before.

Thank you. Is 5.3 the latest that will work? I happened to see some 5.3 CDs on
eBay, but no doubt if I look a bit longer, I'll find later ones too. But there
is no point if a later version will not work.
Do you know how I update the firmware? Is it just the case of downloading a
file, or does one need a contract, or to physically replace a chip? Do IBM ship
the firmware on the OS disks?
I do not know what firmware the machine currently has. I've not switched it on
for years, so I think I'll take a vacuum cleaner to it first before switching it
on.
