Hi there!

Just got me two RS/6000 machines running "IBM AIX Version 3 for RISC
System/6000" and I can't even get it to untar a file, I can't get ssh
to compile and lotsa ship seems to be screwed. Can I use any later AIX
version? I don't even know what hardware's in it...

On Sun, 29 Aug 1999 05:24:00 GMT, ndro...@io.frii.com (Nicholas

It has a display that shows like 120 when I turn it on and then count
up to like 600 or something while it boot's. I do not have any
installation media at all but I have licenses for the 2 AIX 3.2.5 I
run on the two RS/6000.

I tried to compile ssh but get alot of symbolic link errors. Is there
any bash for AIX? I don't like korn nor csh....
It doesn't seems like I have any unzip app for it neither and there is
no such thing as "adduser" nor "useradd".

This is my first time running AIX and I can't say that I'ts been a
very pleasant start. I use Solaris mostly but I must say that I'm a
bit impressed..I just did a level 0 dump with 100 users
online....can't say Solaris would have done that.....

1. tar:
        IMHO the AIX-tar is a bit outdated ;-)
        try using gnu-tar, you can get precompiled packages at
        www.bull.com

2. ssh:
        ./configure --disable-asm

3. other Questions:
        we need to know what kind of RS6K you have...

bye

There should be small grey sign on front of your box.
looks like that:

        *********************
      *                     *
      *  I  BB  M M         *
      *  I  BB  MMM         *
      *                     *
      * RISC System/6000isc *
      * <ModelNo>          *
      **********************

The <ModelNo> is the important part.

bye

hi,
Since your'e running AIX 3.2 you must be having an older model RS6k, using
the Power or Power2 CPU type, and having the Microchannel bus. Multi
processing (SMP) and PCI bus is not supported in AIX 3.2

Bash is available (like most other freeware in precompiled and installp
format) at
http://www-frec.bull.com/docs/download.htm
Bull manufactures RS6k 'clone' machines.

Hoppas detta hjälper dig på traven (=HTH)
/Håkanen

And our 7043-150 and 7043-140 are also identified as '4C'.
Would be nice with "a better way", ie. one that gives a more correct
answer.
