If the gxt6500p is not compatible, can someone recommend a modern card
that will work on a 7029-6c3 ( AIX 5.3 or 6.1 ). The older gxt135p only
has 16 megs of memory and is very expensive. I picked up a used
gxt6500p with 128megs of video memory for $39. It seems the gxt135p is
going for $150+ ( kind of crazy to me ).
Thank You

The ePay prices are because the el cheapo GXT135 is Linux compatible and
the better cards are not.
If you can reach the SMS bootmenu, console on the lft0 and the X Server
starts after installing the device filesets from AIX CD1 it will work
for you, as long as you don't need to call IBM's support.
I have a GXT550P in my 7043P-150 and it works rock stable with AIX
5.1ML9 even if it officially not supported

According to the IBM Redbook "pSeries 615 Models 6C3 and 6E3 Technical
Overview and Introduction" (available online in pdf form), the 6C3 model
only supports the GXT135P adapter. This means that the firmware in
the system probably won't recognize and support any other graphics
adapter (...this assumes that there isn't a firmware update to support a
later 2D graphics adapter...).
A lot of these servers didn't support the 3D graphics adapters --
customers were expected to purchase other (more costly) systems if they
wanted to be able to use the GXT6500P and GXT4500P adapters.
3D graphics development in AIX was dropped in 2006 so no newer 3D
graphics adapter support exists in AIX.

Thanks again for the responses..
PS - Just in case, the gxt6500p doesn't work in my system after
installing aix, can someone please recommend where I can purchase a
reasonably priced gxt135p 16 meg video card? Once again, ebay's prices
are ridiculous!

I don't have any GXT135P (Type 1-X) adapters in my hands right now, but
I could make you a good deal on a GXT300P (Type 1-U). I'm pretty sure
that the GXT300P works in the 7029, it was simply withdrawn from
marketing before the 7029 was available. The GXT300P was commonly used
in the 7043 and 7044 machine types.

IntelliStations and 44P's costlier than p615's ?

Would the existing GXT's be supported beyond 6.1?
And while we're at it:
Discontinuing IntelliStations and offering lame Windoze solutions
as a replacement is a somewhat disappointing move by a company
touting Linux.
No -- other Power 4 & Power 5 systems that did support the adapters.

I don't know what the end-of-life plans are for the adapters -- I no
longer work for the AIX organization or for IBM.

IBM is made up of different organizations with a lot of different goals,
which are not always fully compatible with each other. The strategies
don't always seem to make sense because the priorities of the groups
setting the strategies aren't always in sync. I don't agree with all
of the moves that have been made in the pSeries line or in AIX but the
decisions are made by executives and they have their own priorities.
