The new IBM released Firefox 3.0.7 so far has two identified problems:

first: you cannot save preferences
see
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=531394>
for more including easy workaround and complete solution.

second and much worse:
The GNOME runtime RPMS break binary compatibility with the 32bit AIX
5.1/GTK2 builds of Firefox 2 / Thunderbird 2 and Seamonkey 1.1 as IBM
has "forgotten" to archive the 32bit shared lib members in their new RPMS.
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=531413>

Workaround: use the according RPMS from
www.bullfreeware.com
or
www.perzl.org/aix
instead.

third:
don't try on AIX 5.3 on anything before TL6, no matter what the installp
".toc" or the README.install says (AIX 5.3 GA).

Hard to use download director for download TL6 or something newer if
they broke your Seamonkey and the Firefox does NOT start because
libpthreads.a does not export a needed symbol :-(

Don't blame me, I always tried to maintain runtime compatibility between
the IBM provided Firefox and my Seamonkey and Thunderbird builds.

Hi Uli,

Does their port at least mean your work is easier to do a correct
build? Any chance yours will run on AIX 5.1?

Have you ever though about building Qt 4.5 for AIX? Arora is a very
nice, light weight browser http://code.google.com/p/arora/. Since it
uses QtWebkit, it has the same speed and rendering accuracy as Safari
or Google Chrome.

They used XLC/C++ compiler 9 with April 2009 fix pack. This one won't
run on AIX 5.1.
I can successfully build on AIX 5.1 with XLC/C++ 8 as a 32bit binary.
But at the moment Firefox 3.0.x, 3.5.x or Seamonkey 2.0 (my main target)
will immediatly crash when saving a downloaded file at various locations
in source. This bug is hard to track down. And I expect some more to
come up after fixing this one.

The problem is building a stable 32bit app.
If this is working, it's quite easy to backport even to AIX 4.3.3 with a
few additional patches due to the strictly standard ANSI conforming
VisualAge 6 compiler, instead of the
wishy-washy-ambiguious-eating-even-the-worst-source GCC.

the newer compilers mainly focus on GCC compatibility.

Nope. I haven't enough spare time for another hobbyist big porting
project. Not even enough time to keep up with Mozilla.

There are now updated RPMs available providing 32bit compatibility.
Issue is fixed.
