An example of a novel?

Is there an example of a novel sized book anywhere on the internet? It
would need to have the dimensions of a typical novel - the sort of
thing we would find in any bookshop? I'm looking for something with
classic book typography.

I did one of a similar size, Mike Brotherton's _Star Dragon_ which is
on his site as a .pdf.
Here's the preamble and the first part of it. One of the commented out
sizes should work for you if you're in the US. The hyperref commands
should be adjusted, but otherwise should work for you.

This is an attractive book. Two minor observations: the even/odd page
margins are shifted in the wrong directions, and the pdf page numbers do not
correspond to the actual page numbers (because of the six roman-numbered
pages in front). The latter issue would probably be fixed by \pagenumbering
commands at the beginning of Page i and Page 1.

Something's not right with your mathpazo font setup or it's not working
w/ your TeX --- which version of TeX are you using, from what
distribution on which platform?
In the meanwhile comment out the \usepackage[...]{mathpazo} line or
replace it w/ \usepackage{mathptmx}.

You are missing the TeX metric file for ZapfDingbats. Since this file is
part of PSNFSS, which in turn is a required part of LaTeX, this should
not happen. Which TeX system are you using?

Edgy has both tetex and texlive packages. Which packages do you have
installed? In case you are using the tetex packages, you have to install
tetex-extra (known bug).

You were right. There was a missing font package. It turns out I was
using texlive and I had not installed the fonts packages. I guess there
is just a missing dependancy somewhere.
More oddities with the novel format: When I try to view the PDF in
Adobe Acrobat I get the following output:
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
[repeated hundreds of times]
It seems as if pdflatex is producing some bogus output. Th program
keeps printing this error message untill I give it a ^C to interrupt
it.
When I view the document in evince it loads fine, however certain pages
have an odd character sequence on them: "". In case that gets
munged via NNTP, it is three chars. The first is a letter i with an
umlaut. The second is a chevron pointing right and the third is an
upside-down "?".

This looks as if you save your docuemnt in UTF-8 encoding and your
editor includes a byte-order mark in the beginning. Try to get rid of
that.

Could you be more explicit? Which packages did you install initially?
Which package was missing? At least in Debian, pzdr.tfm is in
'texlive-fonts-recommended'. You can install a LaTeX system without this
package (the same holds for the TeX Live CD/DVD), but if you install,
eg, the 'texlive' package, which is the recommended way of installing a
reasonable sub set of the texlive-* packages, then
'texlive-fonts-recommended' is one of the packages that is installed.

them all to ASCII? There should be no special characters in them which
would require fancy conversion? I was wondering if there was a standard
tool that will do the job for me.
Alternativly, I was wondering if there was a way to make Latex use UTF
files and just ignore that leading byte?

No, that shell script which is called 'acroread' in the current
Linux/Unix version is buggy and not written to be even somewhat robust.
Most likely if you comment out lines which say
if [ "`uname -s`" = "Linux" ]; then
MIN_GTK_VERSION="240"
check_gtk_ver_and_set_lib_path "$MIN_GTK_VERSION" ### returns 0 if found gtk >= 2.4
fi
(or something close) then this will start working for you. Otherwise
fix 'sed' in 'get_gtk_file_ver()' function.
A simpler way is to use some other PDF viewer - like 'xpdf' or
'evince'.

Whew! Maybe... I never tried that!
For UTF-8Y, it's just a classical UTF-8 whith the following 3-bytes header:
"EF "BB "BF
It will be easier to add this header than to add a feature to recode.
